A Hard Pill To Swallow

A HARD PILL TO SWALLOW

The doctor gave me many pills to help with my disease,
And most of them he gave to me I knew I’d take with ease.
But one he gave was giant size, and yet he said to me,
“Don’t break it up, but take it whole, or you again I’ll see.”
I didn’t know about that pill, and when I saw its name,
I knew it would be very hard, and I felt so ashamed.
Across the broad, gigantic pill a word was deep inscribed;
It was the word I dread the most--the single word was PRIDE.
Yes, pride is such a bitter pill, and large may be its size,
But yet with just a magic touch, it shrinks before my eyes.
For when I bow my knee to God, confess that awful sin,
Amazingly it goes right down and brings me peace within.
Oh help me, Lord, to swallow pride and not to let it grow,
For as it grows it’s hard to take and swallow down, I know.
But once it’s gone, what victory! What great relief it fills!
What joy and blessings come from God from swallowing that pill!

Pride is a difficult pill to swallow, Clarence, but you have handled it with grace, the best after-drink.
