A Futile Vigil

A Futile Vigil By Elton Camp As if looking to the sea they stand A work that some describe as grand Were they meant to inspire great fear In those, who to their island drew near Could carved eyes actually intimidate Invaders bent on destruction and hate For some other reason were they placed A purpose that passing time has erased Was it a project with wisdom undertaken Or one foolish and very much mistaken Their creators left utter desolation behind To what was really important seem blind A civilization that crumbled and died Though leaving works known worldwide An enduring mystery that makes us say Why would they do things in that way Unclear?
