As I post this, a mourning dove serenades just outside my window.
A Dove
Have you ever seen a mourning dove
Light upon a car?
And sing so sweetly
All your grief to share?
Father passed just before dawn.
My sisters spoke to him and me on the phone.
Hours I stood upon the cool night lawn.
His comatose senses surely did hear
Songs of our love whispered softly.
As first light broke, I heard the words,
"He passed."
Into another realm where his being is free
To visit me perched upon my car.
He stayed as long as I would listen
Staring at me and singing full throated lullabies.
Now, again I remember.
Tucked into bed,
My daddy sings with me all the old tunes.
