A Dog Day Afternoon
He sits almost stationary
staring through the screen
his head hangs as if in sadness
that he is outside and I am in.
Priodically his attention drifts
to the flight of bird or butterfly
and then returns to look at me.
The Sun passes over the trees
casting cool soft shadows
wherein he can rest
waiting patiently, tail wagging, butt shaking.
He is filled with anticipation of my acknowledgement
disappointed to find I still sit
continuing to write
Ignorant of his wants and needs.
Sorrowfully, he comes through the opening
with nails tapping on the floor
then he jumps to take his place
on the sofa or chair
but focusing still,
his eyes on me.
Giving up, he scratches in place
curling in a ball
and flings against the pillows
peacefully asleep, ears flipped back, legs in the air
open to cuddling if it should come.
The wait is over
here it comes
for the dog day afternoon.
