5:30 A.M.
It’s been a long night
All the bars are closed
Turning away
I drive East
Passing
Through towns
And quiet streets
Nestled in anonymity
Up ahead
A glimmer of light
Begins to break across the horizon
As I slow down for a traffic light.
On the corner is a diner
Lit up
All chrome
And empty
Waitress,
Arms crossed over her chest,
Leans forward
Her reflection
Staring out
Through the darkness
Waiting
For her day to start.
A delivery truck is parked
The driver making his rounds
I stop to let him pass
He waves
I wave back
This poem is for the morning people.
