Notes About The Poem
I wrote 250 years and Rising, after writing this below. Of my feelings about this country, how I appreciate it, while it seems other hate it!
I am just a proud American,
nothing more, nothing less.
An American without tags or labels.
I’m not naïve about our nation’s history.
Like many countries far older than America,
we have made mistakes along the way.
But America has learned from many of those mistakes and has achieved and overcome challenges that some of the world’s oldest nations still struggle with today.
Our history is not an inherited legacy that must be blindly followed, as too many people allow themselves to do.
Rather, history is a measuring stick,
a guide that helps us move forward, not backward. Far to often America good grace goes unappreciated and taken for granted. It seems like the love for America is missing by the express actions attitudes displayed throughout the country.
250 Year’s and Rising
Two hundred fifty years, is not so long
When measured by how far this country’s gone.
A perfect orthodoxy it has never been,
Yet the work of perfecting it won’t end.
Its greatness lives in what we choose to keep,
Led by grace and peace, not fires of greed.
Where truth is heard, not drowned by lies,
And common sense is not deaf or blind.
This is what keeps a nation free:
To know its full history, to truly see,
To understand, relate, and appreciate,
So knowledge leads us not to hate.
Look around and recognize the years,
The progress earned through hope and tears.
Of all the nations ever brought to birth,
America stands the greatest on this earth!
