Beowulf (Modern English)

...rder,
and his mother also, it was turned over
into the care of this worldly king, the best
between the two seas, who doled out
coins in the Scedenish lands. (ll. 1677-86)

Hrothgar spoke up, looking upon the hilt,
the olden relic. On it was written the beginning
of ancient strife, when the Flood destroyed,
the gushing ocean, the kindred of giants,
they did wickedness—they were a nation estranged
from the Eternal Lord. The Sovereign gave
them final reward through t...Read more of this...

christmas in a box

...nced to where the policeman's blood
was rattling in his throat

she sewed him up and rolled him
round to the local bank
doled him out to everyone
whose lives had done a blank

policeman's blood and christmas socks
changed every single life
the children came home to freedom
and the lodger kept the wife...Read more of this...

Compassion

...fed six sparrows as they came
 In famished flight;
She was so poor and frail and old,
Yet crumbs of her last crust she doled
 With pure delight.

Then sudden in my heart was born
For my sleek self a savage scorn,--
 Urge to atone;
So when a starving cur I saw
I bandaged up its bleeding paw
 And bought a bone.

For God knows it is good to give;
We may not have so long to live,
 So if we can,
Let's do each day a kindly deed,
And stretch a hand to those in need,
 Bird, beast or...Read more of this...

Gold!

...hammered and rolled,
Heavy to get and light to hold,
Hoarded, bartered, bought and sold,
Stolen, borrowed, squandered, doled,
Spurned by young, but hung by old
To the verge of a church yard mold;
Price of many a crime untold.
Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!
Good or bad a thousand fold!
How widely it agencies vary,
To save - to ruin - to curse - to bless -
As even its minted coins express :
Now stamped with the image of Queen Bess,
And now of a bloody Mary....Read more of this...

The Big Boots Of Pain

...st breath
when the planets drill
your future into you
for better of worse
as you marry life
and the love that gets doled out
or doesn't.

I find now, swallowing one teaspoon
of pain, that it drops downward
to the past where it mixes
with last year's cupful
and downward into a decade's quart
and downward into a lifetime's ocean.
I alternate treading water
and deadman's float.

The teaspoon ought to be hearable
if it didn't mix into the reruns
and thus enlarge ...Read more of this...

The Lost Leader

...t—
Found the one gift of which fortune bereft us,
Lost all the others she lets us devote;
They, with the gold to give, doled him out silver,
So much was theirs who so little allowed:
How all our copper had gone for his service!
Rags—were they purple, his heart had been proud!
We that had loved him so, followed him, honoured him,
Lived in his mild and magnificent eye,
Learned his great language, caught his clear accents,
Made him our pattern to live and to die!

The Widows Tears; Or Dirge Of Dorcas

...stand forsaken.

Ah, Dorcas, Dorcas! now adieu
We bid the cruise and pannier too;
Ay, and the flesh, for and the fish,
Doled to us in that lordly dish.
We take our leaves now of the loom
From whence the housewives' cloth did come;
CHOR. The web affords now nothing;
Thou being dead,
The worsted thread
Is cut, that made us clothing.

Farewell the flax and reaming wool,
With which thy house was plentiful;
Farewell the coats, the garments, and
The sheets, the rugs, made by thy h...Read more of this...
