Mary

 The angel of self-discipline, her guardian
Since she first knew and had to go away
From home that spring to have her child with strangers,
Sustained her, till the vanished boy next door
And her ordeal seemed fiction, and the true
Her mother’s firm insistence she was the mother
And the neighbors’ acquiescence.
So she taught school, Walking a mile each way to ride the street car— First books of the Aeneid known by heart, French, and the French Club Wednesday afternoon; Then summer replacement typist in an office, Her sister’s family moving in with them, Depression years and she the only earner.
Saturday, football game and opera broadcasts, Sunday, staying at home to wash her hair, The Business Women’s Circle Monday night, And, for a treat, birthdays and holidays, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald.
The young blond sister long since gone to college, Nephew and nieces gone, her mother dead, Instead of Caesar, having to teach First Aid, The students rowdy, she retired.
The rent For the empty rooms she gave to Thornwell Orphanage, Unwed Mothers, Temperance, and Foster Parents And never bought the car she meant to buy; Too blind at last to do much more than sit All day in the antique glider on the porch Listening to cars pass up and down the street.

Lent

 Welcome dear feast of Lent: who loves not thee, 
He loves not Temperance, or Authority, 
But is compos'd of passion.
The Scriptures bid us fast; the Church says, now: Give to thy Mother, what thou wouldst allow To ev'ry Corporation.
The humble soul compos'd of love and fear Begins at home, and lays the burden there, When doctrines disagree, He says, in things which use hath justly got, I am a scandal to the Church, and not The Church is so to me.
True Christians should be glad of an occasion To use their temperance, seeking no evasion, When good is seasonable; Unless Authority, which should increase The obligation in us, make it less, And Power itself disable.
Besides the cleanness of sweet abstinence, Quick thoughts and motions at a small expense, A face not fearing light: Whereas in fulness there are sluttish fumes, Sour exhalations, and dishonest rheums, Revenging the delight.
Then those same pendant profits, which the spring And Easter intimate, enlarge the thing, And goodness of the deed.
Neither ought other men's abuse of Lent Spoil the good use; lest by that argument We forfeit all our Creed.
It's true, we cannot reach Christ's forti'eth day; Yet to go part of that religious way, Is better than to rest: We cannot reach our Saviour's purity; Yet we are bid, 'Be holy ev'n as he, ' In both let's do our best.
Who goeth in the way which Christ hath gone, Is much more sure to meet with him, than one That travelleth by-ways: Perhaps my God, though he be far before, May turn and take me by the hand, and more: May strengthen my decays.
Yet Lord instruct us to improve our fast By starving sin and taking such repast, As may our faults control: That ev'ry man may revel at his door, Not in his parlour; banqueting the poor, And among those his soul.

The Trumpeter an Old English Tale

 It was in the days of a gay British King
(In the old fashion'd custom of merry-making)
The Palace of Woodstock with revels did ring,
While they sang and carous'd--one and all:
For the monarch a plentiful treasury had,
And his Courtiers were pleas'd, and no visage was sad,
And the knavish and foolish with drinking were mad,
While they sat in the Banquetting hall.
Some talk'd of their Valour, and some of their Race, And vaunted, till vaunting was black in the face; Some bragg'd for a title, and some for a place, And, like braggarts, they bragg'd one and all! Some spoke of their scars in the Holy Crusade, Some boasted the banner of Fame they display'd, And some sang their Loves in the soft serenade As they sat in the Banquetting hall.
And here sat a Baron, and there sat a Knight, And here stood a Page in his habit all bright, And here a young Soldier in armour bedight With a Friar carous'd, one and all.
Some play'd on the dulcimer, some on the lute, And some, who had nothing to talk of, were mute, Till the Morning, awakened, put on her grey suit-- And the Lark hover'd over the Hall.
It was in a vast gothic Hall that they sate, And the Tables were cover'd with rich gilded plate, And the King and his minions were toping in state, Till their noddles turn'd round, one and all:-- And the Sun through the tall painted windows 'gan peep, And the Vassals were sleeping, or longing to sleep, Though the Courtiers, still waking, their revels did keep, While the minstrels play'd sweet, in the Hall.
And, now in their Cups, the bold topers began To call for more wine, from the cellar yeoman, And, while each one replenish'd his goblet or can, The Monarch thus spake to them all: "It is fit that the nobles do just what they please, "That the Great live in idleness, riot, and ease, "And that those should be favor'd, who mark my decrees, "And should feast in the Banquetting Hall.
"It is fit," said the Monarch, "that riches should claim "A passport to freedom, to honor, and fame,-- "That the poor should be humble, obedient, and tame, "And, in silence, submit--one and all.
"That the wise and the holy should toil for the Great, "That the Vassals should tend at the tables of state, "That the Pilgrim should--pray for our souls at the gate "While we feast in our Banquetting Hall.
"That the low-lineag'd CARLES should be scantily fed-- "That their drink should be small, and still smaller their bread; "That their wives and their daughters to ruin be led, "And submit to our will, one and all ! "It is fit, that whoever I choose to defend-- "Shall be courted, and feasted, and lov'd as a friend, "While before them the good and enlighten'd shall bend, "While they sit in the Banquetting Hall.
" Now the Topers grew bold, and each talk'd of his right, One would fain be a Baron, another a Knight; And another, (because at the Tournament fight He had vanquished his foes, one and all) Demanded a track of rich lands; and rich fare; And of stout serving Vassals a plentiful share; With a lasting exemption from penance and pray'r And a throne in the Banquetting Hall.
But ONE, who had neither been valiant nor wise, With a tone of importance, thus vauntingly cries, "My Leige he knows how a good subject to prize-- "And I therefore demand--before all-- "I this Castle possess: and the right to maintain "Five hundred stout Bowmen to follow my train, "And as many strong Vassals to guard my domain "As the Lord of the Banquetting Hall! "I have fought with all nations, and bled in the field, "See my lance is unshiver'd, tho' batter'd my shield, "I have combatted legions, yet never would yield "And the Enemy fled--one and all ! "I have rescued a thousand fair Donnas, in Spain, "I have left in gay France, every bosom in pain.
"I have conquer'd the Russian, the Prussian, the Dane, "And will reign in the Banquetting Hall!" The Monarch now rose, with majestical look, And his sword from the scabbard of Jewels he took, And the Castle with laughter and ribaldry shook.
While the braggart accosted thus he: "I will give thee a place that will suit thy demand, "What to thee, is more fitting than Vassals or Land-- "I will give thee,--what justice and valour command, "For a TRUMPETER bold--thou shalt be!" Now the revellers rose, and began to complain-- While they menanc'd with gestures, and frown'd with disdain, And declar'd, that the nobles were fitter to reign Than a Prince so unruly as He.
But the Monarch cried, sternly, they taunted him so, "From this moment the counsel of fools I forego-- "And on Wisdom and Virtue will honors bestow "For such, ONLY, are welcome to Me!" So saying, he quitted the Banquetting Hall, And leaving his Courtiers and flatterers all-- Straightway for his Confessor loudly 'gan call "O ! Father ! now listen !" said he: "I have feasted the Fool, I have pamper'd the Knave, "I have scoff'd at the wise, and neglected the brave-- "And here, Holy Man, Absolution I crave-- "For a penitent now I will be.
" From that moment the Monarch grew sober and good, (And nestled with Birds of a different brood,) For he found that the pathway which wisdom pursu'd Was pleasant, safe, quiet, and even ! That by Temperance, Virtue and liberal deeds, By nursing the flowrets, and crushing the weeds, The loftiest Traveller always succeeds-- For his journey will lead him to HEAV'N.

The Owl Describing her Young Ones

 Why was that baleful Creature made, 
Which seeks our Quiet to invade, 
And screams ill Omens through the Shade? 

'Twas, sure, for every Mortals good, 
When, by wrong painting of her Brood, 
She doom'd them for the Eagle's Food: 

Who proffer'd Safety to her Tribe, 
Wou'd she but shew them or describe, 
And serving him, his Favour bribe.
When thus she did his Highness tell; In Looks my Young do all excel, Nor Nightingales can sing so well.
You'd joy to see the pretty Souls, With wadling Steps and frowzy Poles, Come creeping from their secret Holes.
But I ne'er let them take the Air, The Fortune-hunters do so stare; And Heiresses indeed they are.
This ancient Yew three hundred Years, Has been possess'd by Lineal Heirs: The Males extinct, now All is Theirs.
I hope I've done their Beauties right, Whose Eyes outshine the Stars by Night; Their Muffs and Tippets too are White.
The King of Cedars wav'd his Power, And swore he'd fast ev'n from that Hour, Ere he'd such Lady Birds devour.
Th' Agreement seal'd, on either part, The Owl now promis'd, from her Heart, All his Night-Dangers to divert; As Centinel to stand and whoop, If single Fowl, or Shoal, or Troop Should at his Palace aim or stoop.
But home, one Evening without Meat, The Eagle comes, and takes his Seat, Where they did these Conditions treat.
The Mother-Owl was prol'd away, To seek abroad for needful Prey, And forth the Misses came to play.
What's here ! the hungry Monarch cry'd, When near him living Flesh he spy'd, With which he hop'd to be supply'd.
But recollecting, 'twas the Place, Where he'd so lately promis'd Grace To an enchanting, beauteous Race; He paus'd a while, and kept his Maw, With sober Temperance, in awe, Till all their Lineaments he saw.
What are these Things, and of what Sex, At length he cry'd, with Vultur's Becks, And Shoulders higher than their Necks? These wear no Palatines, nor Muffs, Italian Silks, or Doyley Stuffs, But motley Callicoes, and Ruffs.
Nor Brightness in their Eyes is seen, But through the Film a dusky Green, And like old Margery is their Mien.
Then for my Supper they're design'd, Nor can be of that lovely Kind, To whom my Pity was inclin'd.
No more Delays; as soon as spoke, The Plumes are stripped, the Grisles broke, And near the Feeder was to choak.
When now return'd the grizly Dame, (Whose Family was out of Frame) Against League-Breakers does exclaim.
How! quoth the Lord of soaring Fowls, (Whilst horribly she wails and howls) Were then your Progeny but Owls? I thought some Phoenix was their Sire, Who did those charming Looks inspire, That you'd prepar'd me to admire.
Upon your self the Blame be laid; My Talons you've to Blood betray'd, And ly'd in every Word you said.
Faces or Books, beyond their Worth extoll'd, Are censur'd most, and thus to pieces pulled.

The Destroying Angel

 I dreamt a dream the other night
That an Angel appeared to me, clothed in white.
Oh! it was a beautiful sight, Such as filled my heart with delight.
And in her hand she held a flaming brand, Which she waved above her head most grand; And on me she glared with love-beaming eyes, Then she commanded me from my bed to arise.
And in a sweet voice she said, "You must follow me, And in a short time you shall see The destruction of all the public-houses in the city, Which is, my friend, the God of Heaven's decree.
" Then from my bed in fear I arose, And quickly donned on my clothes; And when that was done she said, " Follow me Direct to the High Street, fearlessly.
" So with the beautiful Angel away I did go, And when we arrived at the High Street, Oh! what a show, I suppose there were about five thousand men there, All vowing vengeance against the publicans, I do declare.
Then the Angel cried with a solemn voice aloud To that vast end Godly assembled crowd, "Gentlemen belonging the fair City of Dundee, Remember I have been sent here by God to warn ye.
"That by God's decree ye must take up arms and follow me And wreck all the public-houses in this fair City, Because God cannot countenance such dens of iniquity.
Therefore, friends of God, come, follow me.
"Because God has said there's no use preaching against strong drink, Therefore, by taking up arms against it, God does think, That is the only and the effectual cure To banish it from the land, He is quite sure.
"Besides, it has been denounced in Dundee for fifty years By the friends of Temperance, while oft they have shed tears.
Therefore, God thinks there's no use denouncing it any longer, Because the more that's said against it seemingly it grows stronger.
" And while the Angel was thus addressing the people, The Devil seemed to be standing on the Townhouse Steeple, Foaming at the mouth with rage, and seemingly much annoyed, And kicking the Steeple because the public-houses wore going to be destroyed.
Then the Angel cried, " Satan, avaunt! begone!" Then he vanished in the flame, to the amazement of everyone; And waving aloft the flaming brand, That she carried in her right hand She cried, "Now, friends of the Temperance cause, follow me: For remember if's God's high decree To destroy all the public-houses in this fair City; Therefore, friends of God, let's commence this war immediately.
" Then from the High Street we all did retire, As the Angel, sent by God, did desire; And along the Perth Road we all did go, While the Angel set fire to the public-houses along that row.
And when the Perth Road public-houses were fired, she cried, " Follow me, And next I'll fire the Hawkhill public-houses instantly.
" Then away we went with the Angel, without dread or woe, And she fired the IEawkhill public-houses as onward we did go.
Then she cried, "Let's on to the Scouringburn, in God's name.
" And away to the Scouringburn we went, with our hearts aflame, As the destroying Angel did command.
And when there she fired the public-houses, which looked very grand.
And when the public-houses there were blazing like a kiln, She cried, " Now, my friends, we'll march to the Bonnet Hill, And we'll fire the dens of iniquity without dismay, Therefore let's march on, my friends, without delay.
" And when we arrived at the Bonnet Hill, The Angel fired the public-houses, as she did well.
Then she cried, "We'll leave them now to their fate, And march on to the Murraygate.
" Then we marched on to the Murraygate, And the Angel fired the public-houses there, a most deserving fate.
Then to the High Street we marched and fired them there, Which was a most beautiful blaze, I do declare.
And on the High Street, old men and women were gathered there, And as the flames ascended upwards, in amazement they did stare When they saw the public-houses in a blaze, But they clapped their hands with joy and to God gave praise.
Then the Angel cried, "Thank God, Christ's Kingdom's near at hand, And there will soon be peace and plenty throughout the land, And the ravages of the demon Drink no more will be seen.
" But, alas, I started up in bed, and behold it was a dream!

Sweeney

 It was somewhere in September, and the sun was going down, 
When I came, in search of `copy', to a Darling-River town; 
`Come-and-have-a-drink' we'll call it -- 'tis a fitting name, I think -- 
And 'twas raining, for a wonder, up at Come-and-have-a-drink.
'Neath the public-house verandah I was resting on a bunk When a stranger rose before me, and he said that he was drunk; He apologised for speaking; there was no offence, he swore; But he somehow seemed to fancy that he'd seen my face before.
`No erfence,' he said.
I told him that he needn't mention it, For I might have met him somewhere; I had travelled round a bit, And I knew a lot of fellows in the bush and in the streets -- But a fellow can't remember all the fellows that he meets.
Very old and thin and dirty were the garments that he wore, Just a shirt and pair of trousers, and a boot, and nothing more; He was wringing-wet, and really in a sad and sinful plight, And his hat was in his left hand, and a bottle in his right.
His brow was broad and roomy, but its lines were somewhat harsh, And a sensual mouth was hidden by a drooping, fair moustache; (His hairy chest was open to what poets call the `wined', And I would have bet a thousand that his pants were gone behind).
He agreed: `Yer can't remember all the chaps yer chance to meet,' And he said his name was Sweeney -- people lived in Sussex-street.
He was campin' in a stable, but he swore that he was right, `Only for the blanky horses walkin' over him all night.
' He'd apparently been fighting, for his face was black-and-blue, And he looked as though the horses had been treading on him, too; But an honest, genial twinkle in the eye that wasn't hurt Seemed to hint of something better, spite of drink and rags and dirt.
It appeared that he mistook me for a long-lost mate of his -- One of whom I was the image, both in figure and in phiz -- (He'd have had a letter from him if the chap were living still, For they'd carried swags together from the Gulf to Broken Hill.
) Sweeney yarned awhile and hinted that his folks were doing well, And he told me that his father kept the Southern Cross Hotel; And I wondered if his absence was regarded as a loss When he left the elder Sweeney -- landlord of the Southern Cross.
He was born in Parramatta, and he said, with humour grim, That he'd like to see the city ere the liquor finished him, But he couldn't raise the money.
He was damned if he could think What the Government was doing.
Here he offered me a drink.
I declined -- 'TWAS self-denial -- and I lectured him on booze, Using all the hackneyed arguments that preachers mostly use; Things I'd heard in temperance lectures (I was young and rather green), And I ended by referring to the man he might have been.
Then a wise expression struggled with the bruises on his face, Though his argument had scarcely any bearing on the case: `What's the good o' keepin' sober? Fellers rise and fellers fall; What I might have been and wasn't doesn't trouble me at all.
' But he couldn't stay to argue, for his beer was nearly gone.
He was glad, he said, to meet me, and he'd see me later on; He guessed he'd have to go and get his bottle filled again, And he gave a lurch and vanished in the darkness and the rain.

And of afternoons in cities, when the rain is on the land, Visions come to me of Sweeney with his bottle in his hand, With the stormy night behind him, and the pub verandah-post -- And I wonder why he haunts me more than any other ghost.
Still I see the shearers drinking at the township in the scrub, And the army praying nightly at the door of every pub, And the girls who flirt and giggle with the bushmen from the west -- But the memory of Sweeney overshadows all the rest.
Well, perhaps, it isn't funny; there were links between us two -- He had memories of cities, he had been a jackeroo; And, perhaps, his face forewarned me of a face that I might see From a bitter cup reflected in the wretched days to be.

The Four Zoas (excerpt)

 'What is the price of Experience? do men buy it for a song? 
Or wisdom for a dance in the street? No, it is bought with the price
Of all that a man hath, his house, his wife, his children.
Wisdom is sold in the desolate market where none come to buy, And in the wither'd field where the farmer plows for bread in vain.
It is an easy thing to triumph in the summer's sun And in the vintage and to sing on the waggon loaded with corn.
It is an easy thing to talk of patience to the afflicted, To speak the laws of prudence to the houseless wanderer, To listen to the hungry raven's cry in wintry season When the red blood is fill'd with wine and with the marrow of lambs.
It is an easy thing to laugh at wrathful elements, To hear the dog howl at the wintry door, the ox in the slaughter house moan; To see a god on every wind and a blessing on every blast; To hear sounds of love in the thunder storm that destroys our enemies' house; To rejoice in the blight that covers his field, and the sickness that cuts off his children, While our olive and vine sing and laugh round our door, and our children bring fruits and flowers.
Then the groan and the dolor are quite forgotten, and the slave grinding at the mill, And the captive in chains, and the poor in the prison, and the soldier in the field When the shatter'd bone hath laid him groaning among the happier dead.
It is an easy thing to rejoice in the tents of prosperity: Thus could I sing and thus rejoice: but it is not so with me.

God Needs Antonio

 Your soul was lifted by the wings today
Hearing the master of the violin:
You praised him, praised the great Sabastian too
Who made that fine Chaconne; but did you think
Of old Antonio Stradivari? -him
Who a good century and a half ago
Put his true work in that brown instrument
And by the nice adjustment of its frame
Gave it responsive life, continuous
With the master's finger-tips and perfected
Like them by delicate rectitude of use.
That plain white-aproned man, who stood at work Patient and accurate full fourscore years, Cherished his sight and touch by temperance, And since keen sense is love of perfectness Made perfect violins, the needed paths For inspiration and high mastery.
No simpler man than he; he never cried, "why was I born to this monotonous task Of making violins?" or flung them down To suit with hurling act well-hurled curse At labor on such perishable stuff.
Hence neighbors in Cremona held him dull, Called him a slave, a mill-horse, a machine.
Naldo, a painter of eclectic school, Knowing all tricks of style at thirty-one, And weary of them, while Antonio At sixty-nine wrought placidly his best, Making the violin you heard today - Naldo would tease him oft to tell his aims.

The masters only know whose work is good: They will choose mine, and while God gives them skill I give them instruments to play upon, God choosing me to help him.
"What! Were God at fault for violins, thou absent?" "Yes; He were at fault for Stradivari's work.
" "Why, many hold Giuseppe's violins As good as thine.
" "May be: they are different.
His quality declines: he spoils his hand With over-drinking.
But were his the best, He could not work for two.
My work is mine, And, heresy or not, if my hand slacked I should rob God - since his is fullest good - Leaving a blank instead of violins.
I say, not God himself can make man's best Without best men to help him.
'Tis God gives skill, But not without men's hands: he could not make Antonio Stradivari's violins Without Antonio.
