I felt a funeral in my brain

I felt a funeral in my brain,
   And mourners, to and fro,
Kept treading, treading, till it seemed
   That sense was breaking through.

And when they all were seated,
   A service like a drum
Kept beating, beating, till I thought
   My mind was going numb

And then I heard them lift a box,
   And creak across my soul
With those same boots of lead, again.
   Then space began to toll

As all the heavens were a bell,
   And being, but an ear,
And I and Silence some strange Race
   Wrecked, solitary, here.

This wonderful poem of poetess Maya Angelo delivers a compelling and vivid exploration of mental turmoil. Its imagery is intense and haunting, capturing a sense of internal chaos. In more detail, the poem takes us on a journey through the speaker's mind, using the metaphor of a funeral to convey the experience of mental distress. The repeated actions of mourners walking "to and fro" illustrate a relentless pressure and discomfort in the speaker's thoughts. The description of a "service like a drum" suggests an overwhelming, monotonic feeling that numbs the mind, symbolizing a loss of mental clarity and control. Also, the act of lifting a box hints at the burden or weight of these thoughts, accentuating their heaviness. And as the poem mentions "space began to toll," it depicts a feeling of a huge vacuum and the sense of being hollowed out by emotional stress. The imagery of "heavens were a bell" creates a universal sense of disruption, and as the speaker describes themselves as both an ear and existing with Silence in a strange state, it suggests complete isolation and alienation. The poem’s top-notch diction beautifully captures the chaos and loneliness within a person facing such an overwhelming mental experience.
