Running Rhythm

Running rhythm is the smooth, forward-moving effect created by regular meter, especially when stressed and unstressed syllables repeat in an even pattern. The poem feels as though it flows steadily from one beat to the next, unlike sprung rhythm, which places stronger stress on clustered accents.

Example

The river slips through reeds and stone,
And keeps one steady pace alone.
