Working Things Out

It was a late fall afternoon and darkness already weakened the keen vision when Jacqueline entered the weight room for a light workout before studying in the library. Ever since she was young the concept “strength gained empowered a person” was engraved into the junior sophomoric as the definition that labeled someone a success.

“Jackie you were great in the game last night,” the biology major heard off in the distance as she loitered her way through the dimly lit hallway.

Towell displayed as a necklace the perspiring student entered the locker room only for a few minutes. Picking up weighty textbooks stashed inside a secure cage was the next goal on the evening agenda. Not having time to make the exercise staircase climb for the pre-paid nutrition offered in the cafeteria Jacqueline found herself staring in the mirror flirting with energy candy bars. This innocent action was performed in the same fashion with the boys when they tried to outsmart her on the playing field. Grabbing one the astronauts invented the twenty something proceeded across the path allowing bright streetlights guide her towards the academic peaceful oasis where things can be understood, studied, and figured out.

After succeeding in the step-up challenge Jacqueline reached the top to the healthy minded building geared to stimulating the intellectual soul. Walking in she felt the air condition cooling process and when the elevator bank opened its wealthy vault the up button was pushed ensuring a pleasant ride to the top. Reaching the floor where fiction authors were giving space Jacqueline ventured passed many titles having luring plot lines and when she reached the reference desk the cataloger was patiently waiting,

“Jackie what can I do for you?”

Very sweetly the well-known female footballer answered, “my professor wanted us to read a health care fictional story and report on it when fall terms end.”

Reaching into her desk the curator pulled out a paperback from last century, “here dear, do not worry about the condition, it’s a paperback not hard cover.”

“Thank you,” Jackie was very cordial.

A few months later the written assignment was returned, and Jacqueline looked at the letter “A” in red marking and the comment, “fantastic, well stated.”

Despite the positive commentary the grade did not change her mind instead gave her strength that she was making a wise decision and after class she met with a counselor where she changed majors from “Biology” to “English Literature” discovering it was where she wanted to apply her talented skills.
