to all the life above us

“To All the Life Above Us”

1

“‘to touch the Earth is to die’

said I

to angels with wings to fly”

anonymous

888 bc

At first it didn’t seem real. A reality, a world above us. I guess when we went to space and saw nothing no great cities of light we truly believed that there were no cities of angels. Boy were we wrong. They had been here the whole time watching us and waiting.

2

a shot into the air. A distance passed into the home of the clouds. Beings made as shadows of another reality. It’s like a dreamscape. Not all those that live in clouds have wings for they are the cloud kind given to living on the clouds.

“Many clouds below your feet.” spoken like a gold engraving on the necklace of the three winged being.

“Same to you my brother.” Said the other with similar muscled physique not masked by the robes or necklaces he wore.

“so what has become has best yet to be done.”

“ahhh the old proverb of the horizontal.” These beings, angels if you will, though less in the olden ages of the people below them, but now since planes, helicopters, rockets, and trains opinions of those below the clouds had been changing. as they say heaven holds its head high and none of these winged beings would be doing anything to change what it meant to be on earth. These were true beings of the sky. They believed their affairs to be above anything that was found below. “It’s about another woman isn’t it?”

“Well yes…”His voice led a trail that his heart could not conceal.

“She has the genetic markings?”

“Yes.”

“So give her a sky ride.”

“Yeah…” Trailing again.

“On your cock.” The second said laughing. This sort of thing was common in the old days. Before the raiders could come some of the sky folk would come down and save girls virgins but now things had changed as the earth’s view of rape as an abomination so the sky folk changed their view as well. Earth women had told the stories. “Beware a man sitting on a fence when his feet don’t touch the ground.”

“I know what it means. And I think I’m in love.”

“You’re a goner for sure.”

“Well wish me luck I’m going to see her now.”

3

“Take the chain.” Said Jack the smallest of the three men with the woman we will name Sophie. The others were named Luke and Brian. The whole thing had gone wrong. what the angel thought was going to be a good time was now not living up to expectations to say the least. It was a setup. They knew him as a winged beast but how he had no idea. there hadn’t been a hunter or a party of hunters for decades.

Luke took the chain.

“Read the incantation.”

there was muffled confusion that came out of the mouth of Sophie. It sounded similar to words being read on a staticky tv or old blurred channel on a black and white tv.

and then it began… and all of the four fell to the floor of the high rise apartment. the angel ran full force at the window, grabbing his chain on the way. The window broke in an explosion of glass pieces. The angel put the chain on and flew but the damage was done and he didn’t fly far.

4

“We did it! We have wings now!” Screamed Sophie. Brian was the only one that hadn’t grown either 2 or 3 wings. He stood on the window sill looking at the body of the angel that had fallen to the ground.

“Can we help him?” asked Brian showing the depth of his soul’s kindness.

“Yeah lets go.” said Jack and he ran at Brian pushing him out the window.

“Brian no!” screamed Sophie, she and Brian had an off again and on again relationship which had been on going on 6 months now and the two were quite attached. She ran to the window with Luke right behind her.

The looked down.

The apartment high rise was only 30 stories high and as Brian fell he began change and then he spread the most glorious white wing and changed directions in a second and flew back in the window. Jack was right behind him and he returned with the body of the angel in his arms.

Brian entered the apartment to let Jack in the now whistling post-glass window. He returned and laid down the body of the angel. “Is there no way to save him?”

“I don’t know it doesn’t say anything about it in the spell book.”

“You know he doesn’t look that bad.” Said Luke.

“How old is that poem?” Said Brian. They all knew the anonymous rhyme.

“Roughly 3000 years old.” Replied Sophie.

“You think it could have changed?” Asked Jack.

“Possibly. I mean I don’t know for sure but maybe it did think about life 3000 years ago plague was rampant and people were all murdering each other.”

“Maybe it’s more a rule of thumb something said to keep the angels in the sky and us on the ground.” Said Luke and they all shared a look.

“Well lets go up there and find out.”
