The Turtle and The Crow

The turtle crossed the front yard, taking his daily trek to the woods on the other side of the road. His friend walked along the road, waiting, watching, and then a car, driven by a lady too busy doing other things, ran her over, and left her.

The turtle was devasted. How could she not see? How could she not care? He didn't walk across the lawn for a year, afraid of the drivers. He ate very little, his food source in the woods across the road.

He began his normal mulling about one day, eating leaves and grass. A crow landed next to him and pecked his shell. He moved away, irritated at being bothered. The crow hopped in the way and pecked his shell. He turned and started across the lawn to get away.

Whenever he slowed, the crow, who was hopping along behind him, pecked his shell. At the road, he stopped, afraid to cross. The crow jumped and pecked again. They walked side by side across the road, stopping once when he heard a car. The crow flapped and pecked, the driver stopped, and they finished crossing the road.

He thanked the bird, who nodded and flew away, keeping an eye on her friend from a tree.
