The Pick-up Chapter Twenty Three The Ride
Here’s the next beat, moving straight from your Chapter 22 into the first true “merge / ride” moment. It keeps the tone you’ve been building sensory, liminal, and slightly predatory and lets Talon become the fourth “voice” in the circuit:
The Pick-up Chapter 23.Twenty Three The Ride
(c) 2025 by the Entangled Pair
Talon rolled out of the corridor without a rider.
Chrome and tank caught the flickering bone-light, dragon-shadow rising up the tent walls as if it were stepping off the bike itself. The handlebars shuddered once, then stilled. The pipes exhaled a ribbon of greenish smoke that smelled like diesel and sage.
*mount / three / one*
It wasn’t a command so much as a drumbeat. Their hearts matched it.
Lucky swung a leg over first, boots clicking against the pegs. The tank’s warmth seeped into his thighs. Raven climbed up behind him, her palms on his shoulders. Saniyah reached last, but when her hand touched the sissy bar she felt it soften, become living muscle. The three of them settled, breath catching.
The arena went silent.
Engines on the black-iron track below cut off all at once. Sparks drifted upward, slow as embers in reversed gravity, and dissolved into motes of light. The dragon-shadow folded its wings and flowed into the tank until the chrome turned mirror-dark.
*merge*
Heat bled from the grips into their palms. Lucky’s vision filled with not-road: a thousand dark ribbons twisting outward, every possible street the Uninvited had ever ridden or would. Raven felt the throttle under her fingers without touching it, heard Saniyah’s prayers in her own head, tasted the copper tang of Talon’s fuel.
Their shadows collapsed inward, one outline on the bike now. One heartbeat. One breath.
*we are here*
The track beneath them spun, no gravity, no up or down. The bikes without riders began to circle them, faster and faster, until only streaks of chrome remained. A calliope note rose from below not the old poem this time, but a deep chord that felt like an engine hitting redline.
Lucky opened his mouth. “We’re ” but the word never made it past his teeth. It spilled out of all three throats at once, a single voice:
> “We ride.”
The arena dropped away.
Wind slammed against their faces. Not air, but memory: night roads, lightning storms, desert switchbacks, every mile they’d ever put under their wheels. Talon roared, a sound big enough to fill the sky. Wings of chrome unfurled on either side, sparks shedding like feathers.
For a heartbeat they were above the carnival, looking down on a grid of rides and tents folding themselves up like paper, vanishing into nothing. The town shrank, lights blinking out. Only the black ribbon of highway remained, unwinding into forever.
*choose*
Three images flashed in their minds a crossroad, a tunnel of rain, a stretch of salt flat under a red sun. The choice was theirs.
Saniyah tightened her grip. “Pick one,” she whispered, but her voice came from Raven’s throat.
Lucky grinned into the wind. “All of ‘em.”
Talon’s front wheel lifted, wings snapping once. The bike surged forward, past the crossroads, frightening it's resident demon, then through the tunnel and onto the red glare of the salt flats. The black highway stretched across it, reaching for forever.
The carnival behind them folded into oblivion, like a bad dream at sunrise. The last to fade was the sounds of the calliope...
—to be continued—
This gives you a clear “first ride” that fuses their senses and sets up the next act: they’ve left the old space entirely and can steer into any vision you want a future road, a vision quest, a new town to haunt, even back into the club house with new awareness.
