The mind

Today was normal for me. I did the same thing as I always do. First I get up to take a shower, go to work and come home to work on my garden. My day had just ended and I got my small flower rake to take to the garden. I was working on my roses when I saw an unfamiliar flower that was glowing a little bit. I want to see what kind it was because it had an extraordinary beauty to it, so I picked it. After picking it, I got really tired and the world started to spin. I fell on the small hand rake and felt everything fade away.

I woke up in a different place that I’ve never been before. It was darker than normal and I was alone. Unsure what to do, I started to walk and I heard laughing from a little girl so I called out. “Hello, is anyone here?”

“Yes.”

“Where am I?”

“You are in your thoughts and you can’t get out unless you choose correctly.”

“What I don’t understand. What happened? Can you help me?”

“I’ll do what I can.”

My thoughts were all mixed up. The place I am at started to spin and when I calmed down it did too. Still not sure what this place is, I’m sure that this is real. She speaks again,”You have three hints. When they are out that’s when I have to leave.”

“Okay, can I use one now?”

“Sure, mirror on the wall will that vine wall ever fall?” She picks up a mirror and gives it to me. I look at it and see that my house have a wall of vines around it and my ex wife it trying to get in.

“Why is she here?”

“She cares. You don’t know what day it is do you?” I couldn’t think of any reason she’d come over. I can hear a chainsaw roaring and looked in the mirror to see the vines growing thicker every time they try. Where am I?

The next day she woke me up. Maybe I’ll use another hint to see how to get out of this place that she later told me it was actually called The Mind. I found it a little ironic that i’m literally in my own thoughts. “Can I use a hint now.”

“Sure. The past is the past, but YOU can’t for give.”

“What?”

“Think.” I started to think and everything that I thought what appearing right in front of me. I see my brother joining the Army and wanting me to join also, but I didn’t. He died two years later in Iraq and I thought it was my fault. I see my ex wife in the hospital crying when she had her stillbirth. “That’s why she can over. Today is the day it happened.”

“Correct.”

“We buried the baby in the garden. I want another hint.”

“Okay but after that… I have to leave again.”

“Oka- again?”

“My name is Melissa.”

“What? How? Really if not this is a cruel joke!”

“Stop! It’s me. It’s nice to meet you daddy.” I ran to hug her and when I touched her I saw the three hint and she left. I know what I need to do.

I woke up to a knock on my door. I’m really confused was that a dream? I opened the door to see my brother with two enlisting forms. He said,”Come on man, let’s serve our country.”

With every bone in my body I want to hug him and tell him I miss him but all I said was, “Okay brother, let's do it.” Few months later we get to Iraq and it was time to go to the field. I looked him in the eyes and said,”Don’t go. If you try to go I’ll knock you out.”

“Brother? Why?”

“You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.” He tried to walk but I knocked him out and he fell to the ground. When he woke up a few hours have passed. He whispered,”What happened?”

“I knocked you out.”

“Wha-?” We heard a herd of people come in and were talking about the bombing that happened right where we should have been. My brother said in confusion,”How did you know?”

“You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.”

“Okay well thank you. I love you.”

“I love you too” Right when those words had left my mouth everything went away in dark gray smoke. I has right back to The Mind. I was to confused everything was spinning. I ended up blacking out.

I woke up to bright lights of a hospital. The doctors were saying how healthy our baby girl was and my ex wife still had a ring on her finger. I said,”Are you sure?” The doctor replied,”I’m sure.”

“What about my wife having high blood pressure?” My wife says,”I’m fine. I’ve just be stressed a little with the baby and work.” The doctor gets the blood pressure cuff and my wife had really high blood pressure. The doctor said with a little bit of joy in his voice,”We have medicine that will help you and not hurt the baby.” A few months later my wife had her baby and all was well until it went away in a dark grey smoke.

I woke up in The Mind and she was back. I said,”Hi, I’ve missed you what happened.”

“You fixed it.”

“I did?”

“Yes, but now you have two choices.”

“Okay…”

“You can have all the money and technology in the world.”

“Easy I want my family and you.” She smiled and snapped her beautiful fingers then everything went black.”

I woke up in another hospital but not the same one from the past. I was a patience and I could see my brother and family talking with a doctor. “Hello.” I said with a weak voice. They turned and ran to hug me. The doctor said that I was in a coma from a garden rake and was in it for six months. Melissa said,”Daddy you feel silly.” Those were the best words I’ve ever heard. I got discharged after I few weeks of test. I got home to a house with some vine around it, but they were thin and weak. My wife spoke with calmness,”I guess we need to do some garden work.”
