The Meeting at the Lake

The full moon was shining bright in the Starbright night as the midnight black wolf sped through the forest toward the lake in the center. Which each rushing step he could feel the wind on his fur and hear his heart rushing in his chest. A storm was brewing in the west, but he wasn't worried about that, his instincts were focused on the smell he had picked up earlier. A strange smell.

It was a human woman by the smell, but he didn't care, she was an intruder, and she hadn't been invited. It was almost time for the mating ritual and humans, especially a human woman wasn't allowed to attend. No human has attended the ritual for over two hundred years and he highly doubted that his pack leader Marcus would allow it.

Aries slowed down once he came closer to the lake and the smell became stronger. As the lake came into view he didn't spot her at first until he heard movement coming from the clear waters of the lake itself, and the moment he set eyes on her he knew she had to be his. No, she was HIS. She was his mate.

Aries watched in his wolf form as the woman with auburn hair walked over to where she had placed her stuff and picked up a towel and start to dry herself off. Before he could turn to his human form, a man came out of the woods in front of her.

"Asha, there you are!" The man snapped at the woman as she rolled her eyes at him, "You know you're not supposed to come into this part of the forest. The packs don't like intruders on their territory, people have gone missing."

Aries felt a growl started in his throat, how dare the man lie to his mate. Sure, they get intruders sometimes, but usually, it was teens coming onto the pack's area on a dare, and his pack has never killed, though this man was pushing it with his lies. If Marcus were here he would probably tell him to keep his calm. Wolves are unpredictable when they are mad. Just as he decided to make his self-known, Asha spoke, "Oh, calm yourself, Eli," She responded as grabbed her clothes and headed behind a nearby group of trees to change, "The way I heard it, the wolves only act for two reasons. Once you attack their mate or two you've violated sacred space. As long as we don't do that we should be safe."

The man called Eli did reply and just started to pack the remaining item she had left on the ground into a bag. Aries wasn't paying attention to him though. The moment he realized that she was headed towards the trees, he took a long way, so he was there first. Realizing she was changing he waited patiently to tell her she was done before shifting into his human form and stepping out.

Asha turned and gasped as the raven-haired man with piercing ocean-blue eyes stepped out of the nearby trees. Why she didn't scream she didn't know, even when he stepped up, put his arm around her waist and pulled her body against his muscled one, and kissed her. Maybe it was because she knew he wouldn't hurt her. The passion flamed in his eyes in the full moonlight that was able to shine through the top of the trees. She knew in that passionate moment that she was his forever.

What they didn't know the ritual of the wolves was called a different name a long time ago. It was called the Moonlight Meeting. All wolves met their mates at the lake.
