The Fear of Flying


When the deluge comes to bury Sin City Oom Gawie does not move. '' You are going to die! Run my dear husband!'' His hysterical wife exclaims. Oom Gawie just stares at the deluge. The helicopter hovers above him. The young officer barks at him. '' Don't play Superman now.Get in.Let's go.'' ''Leave me.My fear of flying''

The official stares at him. The water is rising above their ankles. ''You are afraid of flying?'' The officer shouts over the noise. 'I am.'' ''But you are about to drown!'' ''Drowning is natural,''Oom Gawie says. ''Flying is a violation of the ground.'' The officer looks at the helicopter pilot. The pilot shrugs The water reaches their knees. The helicopter stays low. ''We must go!'' the officer says, pulling at Oom Gawie's arm. Oom Gawie remains rooted to the spot. The officer climbs back into the helicopter. ''He is remaining,'' the officer reports back to headquarters. The helicopter flies away. Oom Gawie stands in the water. The water rises to his chest. '' A most natural death,'' he says. The deluge buries Sin City. After the deluge a new city more sinful than the first rises. Oom Gawie was never found. But later his hat was found floating on the surface of the water, a perfectly dry hat.
