Sorrow is Forever but Life is Today
She kept the box under her bed. Inside were old letters, photographs with edges curling, stubs from places that no longer existed. She told herself she would stop opening it, but sometimes the silence in the room grew too heavy and she would lift a lid. Every object carried a weight. A laugh, a moment long gone. Yet, the world around her refused to pause. The sun still broke through the curtain, daring her to rise. The kettle still whistled, stubborn in its routine, as if to remind her that some things carry on whether or not we’re ready. But both spoke the same truth: You only ever hold a moment once.
Maybe sorrow doesn’t go away because it isn’t meant to. Maybe it lives with us. A shadow stitched into the fabric of who we are. But life, life is different. Fragile. Alive. And demanding to be noticed now. It is laughter spilling from the other room. The sudden kindness of a stranger holding open the door.
Carefully, she placed everything back into the box and pushed it beneath the bed. Not to forget. Never to forget. It’s just that....sorrow would always be there. Waiting quietly. But today, today would not. No, today demanded to be felt.
Life was here.
And it was asking for her.
