Markita's Adventure

Once upon a time in a small village in Africa there lived a little girl named Markita who lived with her mom and little brother. One day Markita’s little brother got sick and the Markita’s mother checked the medicine cabinet to see if there was any medicine left but they were all out of water to make the medicine. So, Markita’s mother said to the Markita “we are out of water for medicine, could you go down to the river to get some more water?”

“yes momma”, said Markita to her mother. So Markita grabbed the two baskets from the storage area and walked down towards the river. Along the way Markita saw two cheetah cubs fighting over a piece of food. “ What’s the matter?" said Markitato the two cheetah cubs. “My brother’s piece of food is bigger than my piece of food” No you have the bigger piece of food” said the other cheetah cub. Why not share the food?” said Markita.

So, the lMarkita broke the food in half and gave each cheetah cub an equal share of food. Gee Thanks said the cheetah cubs and each cheetah cub broke off a small piece of their food as a thank you for her help. So Markita continued on her way down the path to the river to gather water for her mother when she heard a voice saying “help me”!! Markita ran over to see where the voice was coming from and saw a baby elephant crying "help me I am stuck”! “What happened? Said Markita. “I was looking for something to eat with my mom when my foot got stuck in this trap and I lost my mom and my herd” said the baby elephant. “Oh no,” said Markita. Do not be afraid I will help you find your mom and free you from this trap”. Said Markita. So, Markita set the baby elephant free and the two of them began to look for the baby elephant’s mom when suddenly a hungry lion appeared and said "I am hungry give me the baby elephant and I will let you go” “No! The baby elephant is my friend” said Markita.

“Friend?” said the hungry lion. So, Markita reached into her basket and gave the hungry lion the food the two cheetahs gave her and the lion let Markita and the baby elephant go. Markita and the baby elephant ran as fast as they could until they found the baby elephant's mom. “Mommy!” said the baby elephant and the mother elephant said thank you to Markita and the baby elephant said “ let’s play together some day”. And Markita smiled as said Ok and continued to walk towards the river.

Suddenly Markita noticed a wildebeest crying and asked him “What’s wrong, why are you crying Mr. wildebeest?” My horn is broken, said the wildebeest.” “Don’t be said mr. wildebeest I can fix your horn”. Said Markita, so Markita took a piece of string from her hair and tied it around the wildebeest’s horn.

“Thank you”. Said the wildebeest. “You're welcome”. “What can I do to help you because you helped me?” asked the wildebeest. I am on my way to gather water from the river” said Markita.

Get on my back I will take you to the river” said the wildebeest.

So, Markita got on the wildebeest’s back and he took her the rest of the way towards the river. Suddenly the wildebeest stopped and said to Markita “This is as far as I can go for there is a mean crocodile near the river. So Markita said bye to her friend the wildebeest and walked the rest of the way to the river, where she met the mean old crocodile. “Who dares come to the river”? Said the crocodile. Excuse me Mr. Crocodile. I have to get some water for my mom said Markita. The mean old crocodile opened his mouth to show his big teeth. But the brave little girl was not afraid. Why are you so mean? asked Markita. “My teeth hurt,” said the crocodile. If you can bring me some honey from the beehive in the forest I will let you get water from the river.

So Markita ventured to the bee hive near the tree by the river where a swarm of bees rapidly surrounded her demanding her to turn back immediately or face the consequences.

Please lend me some of your honey so I can help my friend the crocodile heal his tooth pain. I promise I will leave afterwards. The leader of the soldier bees replied “You must speak with our queen before we give you our precious honey.

Ok said Markita, and with that Markita was brought before the queen bee to ask permission for their valuable honey.

WHO GOES THERE?!! Said the queen bee.

Please said Markita I mean you no harm my friend the crocodile is in pain his tooth hurts really bad and I need some of your honey to make him feel better.

I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BUT UNDERSTAND OUR HONEY IS VERY VALUABLE TO US AND EVERY CREATURE IS TRYING TO STEAL IT.

IF WE GIVE YOU ARE HONEY WHAT TO WE GET IN RETURN? Asked the queen bee.

Markita thought about the queen bee’s question for a second and remembered bee love flowers.

“If you give me some of your honey I will bring you lots of flowers from my village.

REALLY? THAT IS WONDERFUL said the queen bee.

Yes, the most beautiful flowers grow around my village. Said Markita.

OK, take as much honey as you need said the queen bee.

GAURDS!! GIVE OUR FRIEND SOME OF OUR HONEY! Said the queen bee.

The guard brought Markita a jar of their honey to Markita

And Markita brought the honey to the crocodile and his tooth felt better.

Thank you, you may take as much water as you need. Said the crocodile.

Markita filled up jars her mother gave her with as much river water as she could carry.

Markita then made her way back to her village on her way back down the path to the river she ran into her friend the elephant traveling with his herd.

Hi my elephant friend, said Markita

Hi how are you said the elephant, It’s great to see you again. We are on our way down to the river to get a drink.

That is wonderful, do you need help carrying your water jugs? asked the elephant

Yes, said Markita.

With that the elephant herd picked up Markita and her water jugs and carried her all the way back to her village.

Once Markita made it back to her village everyone greeted her and was amazed to see her riding on the back of a huge elephant.

Markita then bright the water to her mother so she could heal Markita’s little brother.

You are back so soon, said Markita’s mother.

Yes mother, said Markita, but I made so many friends, Markita said.

I see said Markita’s mother.

Then Markita remembered the promise she made to the queen bee.

Is there something wrong? Asked Markita’s mom.

I made a promise to a friend that I have to keep. I will be right back mother, Said Markita.

OK, be safe. Said Markita’s mom.

Markita then ran back to her friend the baby elephant and asked him to help her pick some flowers and bring them back to the beehive near the river.

So Markita and the baby elephant brought the flowers back to the queen bee.

Hi queen bee, I brought you some flowers just as I promised said Markita.

WONDERFUL! Said the queen bee.

SINCE YOU KEPT YOUR PROMISE TO US, YOU ARE WELCOME TO VISIT US ANYTIME IF YOU NEED HONEY. Said queen Bee.

Thank you your highness said Markita.

And with that Markita and the baby elephant went back to her village then said their good bye as the went their separate ways.

Thank you so much said Markita.

Your welcome. Said the baby elephant

Don’t forget to visit me so we can play together said the Baby elephant

I will and next time I will bring my little brother so we can all play together. Siad Markita.

That would be so much fun. Said the baby elephant.

So Markita and her little brother went outside to play together.

And Markita told her little brother all about all the friends she made on her journey to the river.
