I'm poor, midwife

"Arrrrgggghhhh" A fair skinned woman let out a scream. She was in labour, obviously in pains. Sweat trickled down her face hurriedly in cupious quantity. Her anguish was visibly seen in her quavering voice. Her name is Malumi The wrapper covering her fragile body is soaked with both blood and sweat, Such a pitiful sight! "I can't push" she said breathlessly "Yes, you will, why did you get pregnant if you know you can't" The midwife retorted rudely "So push, I don't have all the time in the world for your pathetic child" She pushed with all her strength as the midwife kept on with insults upon insults. Earlier on, she had told Aremu to register her elsewhere but his financial capability isn't much. A baby's cry rented the air. It is a she. A beautiful dark skinned beauty. "Wretched beauty" The midwife muttered in jealousy. She went outside to get water while the woman was still in bed writhing in pain Malumi wondered what's making her feel pains even after birth "Is it two?" She wondered "Oh God, don't let it be two, I have no resources to cater for two babies" She prayed while moaning in pains. "What is it again" The midwife asked harshly "Is it twins?" Malumi was almost lifeless and she tried to communicate with the midwife who was nochalant. She bathed the child who is still crying on top of her voice. She did the necessary things and wore the baby Shabby clothes that Aremu bought. Then she wrapped her up in the old but clean shawl and placed her in a rusty crib. "Hey,wom....." She turned and her eyes widened when she saw Malumi lifeless. "Hello, don't do this" she yelled "Don't spoil the reputation I've built for years" Then her eyes widen as the realization hit her hard. "The umbilical cord" she whispered, alarmed. She turned to the woman and felt her pulse but Malumi is no longer breathing. Tears outline visible on her face. Aremu heard all what transpired in there as he stood in front of the door, tears trickled down his face. The midwife opened the door and break the news to him sadly but she didn't include her own carelessness and lack of care. Aremu stared at her murderously and sighed "No justice, I can't afford that"He bite his fingers in regrets. The baby cries increased in decibel......
