Getting Closer
A week later from her meeting with Ayden in town Freya was in the barn. "Hello my sweet girl how are you? You want a treat? I have something for you." Cinnamon took the apple from Freya's hand and then nipped her hair. "Hey that isn't food you silly girl." Freya said laughing pulling her hair from her horse and patting her on the back. Just outside the barn there was yelling and soft whimpering. "YOU FORGOT IT! HOW COULD HAVE FORGOTTEN IT? YOU STUPID MAN." Freya ran out of the barn fast as her dress let her. Before Mitchell Myer raised his hand with a belt to hit his servant Freya grabbed it from him. "What the hell are you doing? What is your name Stefan right? Go inside and Theodora will take care of you. We don't hurt anyone who works for us. Got it?!!" Mitchell tried to tower over Freya looking down staring down at her. "Stefan forgot my pocket watch at home I always had it until now."
Freya got on her tiptoes and stuck her pointer finger into his chest. "I don't care if he left the cup you got from God himself if you don't follow the rules of the house my father will throw you out!!" Mitchell Myer narrowed his eyes at her trying to put her in her place. "I'm going to make you pay for what you just did Miss. James. Mark my words." Freya went back to her day spending time with Cinnamon and trying to stay away from Mitchell Myer if possible. At almost sundown she sat on the hill overlooking where her mother and brothers lay to rest. "I wish you were here. I miss you all. Even you Brandon and Bryce." out of nowhere Freya heard footsteps coming to her and snap of a twig. When she looked up she saw the Union Soldier in farm work clothes. "Hello Southern Fire odd place to find you." Jonathan Rosemen said sitting down next to her. "Speak for yourself. I'm here to visit my mother and brothers. Wishing they were here."
The Union Soldier looked at her sweetly pulling her hair away from her face and tucking it behind her ear. "I know how you feel the only family I have left is my kid sister and my grandmother. We lost our mother a day after Grace was born and few years ago our father died from smallpox. Ever since then our dad's mother took us in and took care of us. Then the war started and oh God if you heard Little Storm yell at me when I signed up. You would have thought I was the devil with his hand in the cookie jar. My Little Storm." He said with a soft sigh then followed by a laugh. "What is it with you and nicknames? Southern Fire and Little Storm?" Freya smiled at him trying not to laugh. "Trust me if you met Grace you'll see why I call her Little Storm. Her temper is worse than your's and that is saying something. She will be 13 too soon. God have mercy on the man who falls in love with her. He would have to deal with me then put up with her temper." They both laughed softly to themselves.
"You sound like a good brother to have. Mine use to pick on me and called me stinky. Nice brothers right? They were okay I guess." The couple got closer to each other talking about their lives and the loss of their lost loved ones. Freya put her head on his shoulder taking in his sent breathing him in. Jonathan wrapped his arm around her and kissed her forehead. After dinner the Union Soldier was sitting on the porch drinking whiskey and watching the stars. The screen door opened and closed with a click. "You know Southern Fire I never really took the time to look at the stars since I left home. And this whiskey reminds me of you. So smooth and the fire it puts into my chest. Reminds me of your sweet fiery kiss." When the Union Soldier turned around he saw Mitchell Myer there foaming at the mouth. "You kissed Freya? She is be my wife in a matter of a few months!! It's best that you leave before I treat you like my servant. And believe me you don't want that."
Around mid morning Jonathan Rosemen dropped his bag by the front door dressed in the fake Confederate uniform. "I think it's time for me to get back to my men." Mr. James, Mitchell and Freya went to the door to say goodbye. " It was nice to meet you Mr. Rosemen best of luck to you." Jonathan Rosemen shook William James's hand. "It was nice meeting you too and thanks for the luck." The Union Soldier went to Mitchell Myer next. "Nice to meet you. And I hope you and Miss. James are happy together." The two men shook hands trying to break the others. Before Jonathan turned to Freya he took something from his pocket. "Well Miss. James it has been nice getting to know you. Good-bye Freya." She went to the table and grabbed a blank notebook. "This is for your sister for her birthday coming up. Just in case you don't have time to shop for her. Goodbye Mr. Rosemen." When she handed him the notebook he slide her a note.
The Union Soldier picked up his bag and went out the door. As he went up the drive with his horse he turned around and smiled at the window. As Freya watched the man for who she might be in love with; Mitchell Myer came up behind her. "The next time you cross me it will be your beloved horse Cinnamon. And then who knows after that." He threatened in her ear softly and walks away. Clearing a tear away from her face Freya opened the note she got from Jonathan. "Southern Fire I'll be back in a month meet me in our spot in the woods. You know it by the river where we met. I'll see you then. Remember one month from today. Love, your union soldier boy." She smiled of the thoughts of seeing him and her heart again.
