Finding My Grandmothers Diamond Ring
Tumi lived with his grandmother, young sister and cousin. Mother and father separated, moved on with life. As in made new babies both their parents had son’s whom lived with them in the same house. Even though they both visited their mother on the weekends on a regular basis. Only got to visit their father during the school holidays. He lived in a province that required them to sit in a bus for seven hours. With a stop after three hours and thirty minutes. They both did not enjoying sharing the same house with their step mother and father. But we’re still children and there was nothing they could have done. They grew up learning about their history from their grandmother.
Who was also the best story teller and she had told them about one of her best story.
Which was mainly about how their great grandpa used to be the best traditional leader. How they grew up in an initiation school owned by their father. Who had a lot of cattle’s and used to know more about circumcision. His grandmother was still a young at that time together with her twin brother. Her grandma told them about how her mother gave her, her diamond ring. Which she was married to her father with! Just before she passed away and she had carried it her entire life. Only to lose it a few months before and she spoke with a certain traditional healer.
To help her find it and she did so with the intention of finding her precious ring. As it meant a lot to her and them. The traditional healer’s strategy was to paste her to the ring. That was the only way to find it. And she was old and could not perform the task. So she decided to use Tumi and only when he is old enough. She only told them about the diamond ring so that one day when they find it they could remember her. If she is no longer alive when that happens. They were going to remember the diamond ring as it formed part of their history. Two years later their grandmother passed away. Their father and step mother married while their mother and step father separated.
That made their mother to move back into their grandmother’s house. Together with her younger brother as they were hurt from their mother’s death. Not to mention that they could not live Tumi, his younger sister and cousin in the house alone. Tumi lost his grandmother as a Grade six learner at the nearest High School. It hurt him the most but then again he really had to grow up and move on with life. As he was the oldest and first grandson his grandmother had!
………………………. Seven (07) Years Later ……………………….
Tumi had passed his Grade twelve together with his cousin. His younger sister was doing Grade twelve at that time. He made a lot of his ex-schoolmates in his area a little bit proud as he had acquired a Bachelor. Which was mainly a B on his Matric Statement and had to collect his Matric Certificate. He had spent time with them at the park. Then headed home straight whereby he found his mother. And uncle waiting for their matric results. They celebrated just after he showed them his matric statement. He had planned to spend the day chilling with his friends at the park. Smoke weed the whole day and all of a sudden his plans had changed.
He was called by the one of the neighbors, Mr. Roger who he always helped. He was to help him clean the neighbors yard. His mother instructed to help and stay far away from smoking. Plus he will be generating extra income for himself. He then decided to listen to his mother plus he needed the money to use later. When chilling with his friends, so he immediately decided to go see Mr. Roger. He found him cleaning the yard inside and just as he saw him approach his gate. He stopped and waited for him to enter. Tumi opened up the gate and entered. He did so greeting his neighbor, Mr. Roger who was a old man. Who was a old man who lived alone. And sometimes spent most of his time on the weekends.
With his friends drinking beer. Mr. Roger was happy to see Tumi. He did not waste time but immediately gave Tumi a spade to use then cleaning up his yard. He did so reaching out for a rake to use too clean up the rubbish he had made at that time. Him and Tumi spoke about how much he was to be paid just as he worked. They agreed on the price after negotiating for almost ten minutes. Tumi had to stop working as Mr. Roger was deducing the price too much. He went back to work as soon as they had an agreement. Mr. Roger left him for a few seconds and went to the store to buy them cold drinks and snacks to consume just as they worked.
Tumi continued working alone as in removed the plants and grass that grew inside the yard. He stumbled upon a shoe lace that was decorated. Using the colors on the Rastafarian flag. With Bob Marley’s face printed on it in color Black. Just after that he found a Diamond Ring that looked like it was a Carrot diamond on Silver. He picked it up and found that it was not Silver but Copper coated using Silver. The Carrot Diamond seemed dull as it was lost in a area unfindable and full of soil. The soil that covered it had made it dull or to lose its brightness. He immediately put it in his pocket and planned to use a brick on it to check if it were real. But could not do so in front of Mr. Roger and just as he thought about him.
And put his hand with the ring on his fingers in his pocket. Mr. Roger opened up the gate holding the cold drinks and snacks in a black plastic. Tumi immediately let got of the ring his hands and acted as if he was clearing something in his eye. He did so with one hand covering his eye. He then threw the spade he had balanced against his thighs on to the ground. Then moved continued to act as if he were clearing some soil in his eye. Then he picked up the spade as if he had cleared up the soil in his eye. He then went back to working, Mr. Roger stopped him. While instructing him to stop what he was busy with. And come to eat and drink the snacks and cold drinks he came with!
Tumi then stopped and went to sit under a tree Mr. Roger planted in his home. He then opened up the packet of snacks Mr. Roger handed out to him. He did so asking him what was wrong with his eye. He told him he was removing the soil that went into his eye. He said so with dust around his eye as if he had puffed his face. Or applied makeup, thru ate the snacks and drank cold drinks. Got back to work and by sun down they had already cleaned half of the yard inside. Mr. Roger gave Tumi half of the money they agreed on. He left in a hurry after they had packed the tool they were using. Tumi left Mr. Roger’s home and went to his home.
Straight into his bedroom to test if the Diamond was original. He did so by carefully removing the Carrot Diamond on the Copper. They looked for a stone outside and hit it hard with a stone twice. Just after what he did he was now confirmed that the Carrot diamond was original. He then put it in his pocket and took a bath. Ate dinner slept and woke tomorrow early on the morning to show his friends. He did so and just after they left him. He spent some time alone starring at it and then lost it. It fell on the ground full of sand so it was not easy for him to find it. He looked for it till his mother and uncle instructed him to stop. As he spent close to six hours looking for it. When he told his mother about it she reminded him of his grandma’s Diamond ring. He now remembered the story and got to be happy that he found his grandma’s Diamond ring. Even though he was angry and sad that he lost it a few hours after he found it. He was told about how her grandma had invested in Japan using the same Diamond ring. He also learned that his grandmother needed him to marry him a woman. As he was old enough and capable of supporting his babies. His thought about the matter and remembered the shoe lace.
