Expecting the unexpected

Chris began to question the wisdom of this trip. Firstly, Chris didn’t like to ski. In fact, he hated it. The cold
bleak weather, the uncomfortable ski shoes, the slippery slope were all the reasons for his great aversion to
skiing. His brother Dawood planned the trip and he wasn’t looking forward to it. However, he had to go
because it would be rude not to show up to this outing. In fact, he hasn’t seen David for a year and half now
since he has been studying for a medical school overseas.
Chris might as well enjoy this airplane ride to his final skiing destination in the Cat Skills in New York.
Traveling on Delta was a calm and peaceful ride. He had put on his red ribbed Calvin Klein sweater with a
solid grey turtle- neck underneath and his Buffalo brand jeans. He always sat on the window seat when
traveling on the airplane. Gazing outside was a spectacular view. He could see white fluffy clouds and the
crystal- clear blue sky. The window view was so clear that if he looked carefully, he could see his reflection in
the window. He sat for half a minute staring at his reflection. His dark brown hair and chestnut brown eyes
gave a very stern, but gentle impression of himself as he glimpsed at his image. He sat on the plane
remembering his brother Dawood and thought of the resemblance. Dawood was his alter- ego with light brown
hair and dashing green eyes.
Finally, it was time for the plane to land. The pilot controlled the plane steadily as it landed. “Bam”, a perfect
landing!
Chris thought to himself.
No turbulence of any kind was experienced on the plane ride. It was a smooth ride. Now, he had to meet his
brother Dawood at the airport. Where was he?
Chris wondered as he got his brown-colored luggage at the airport. He waited for a good thirty minutes for
Dawood to arrive. Finally, Chris noticed Dawood behind an old man who was walking in front of him.
Dawood saw Chris and waved behind this old man. This old man’s steady gait was slow and rhythmic; as he
too gathered his belongings. Then suddenly out of the clear blue Dawood started talking to this old man as if
he knew him. Chris quietly observed this and wondered who this old man is and why is Dawood talking to him
as if he knows him?
I sure don’t know this old man! Chris quietly was thinking to himself.
Dawood and the old man slowly came and approached Chris at the airport exit. Dawood started the
conversation by saying,
“Hey Chris, so glad you made it!”
Chris smiled at Dawood and gave him a playful jab on his shoulder and said,
“I couldn’t miss this great opportunity to meet you again for the world bro!”
Chris looked at the old man standing next to Dawood and didn’t recognize him at all. As a matter of fact, he
looked totally foreign to him. Dawood casually asked him,
“Chris, aren’t you going to say hi to our dad to bro?”
Startling thoughts suddenly raced to Chris’s head. “We had a father?” “How could that be?” “How come I
don’t remember him”.
