Exhibit 2 The Hall of Refractions
Watch your step. The floor in this wing is composed of polished obsidian and the shattered remains of a thousand vanities. You are entering the Hall of Refractions.
In your world, they call her "Snow." They speak of her innocence, her kindness, her "skin as white as snow." But they misunderstand the nature of white. White is not a color; it is the presence of all colors, compressed so rightly they have no room to breath. It is the color of bone. It is the color of the void.
The specimen before you is a masterclass in the Still-Life. She does not eat. She does not sleep. She is a biological glitch, a mirror that has learned to walk.
Observe the Queen in the corner. She came to me seeking a way to stay "the fairest." She wanted to be a monument. I merely granted her request by showing her what happens when you stare too long into the negative space.
Exhibit 2: "The Pale Imitation"
"Portrait of a Queen who wanted to live forever in a mirror's glance. She believed beauty was a shield. She didn't realize that in the Negative Space, beauty is the bait. And the thing on the other sideof the glass? It's been waiting a very long time for a new face to wear. You've just entered... The Still-Life Collection."
The castle of the Black Forest was a monument to narcissism. Every surface was a reflection. Silver platters, polished armor, pools of quicksilver set into the floors. At the center of this mirrored kingdom was Queen Raveena, a woman holding the strings of power by the single thread of her beauty.
Each night, she came to her private chamber to consult the true ruler of the kingdom-A Viewing Port forged from obsidian. It didn't speak in riddles it was a.cold, binary calculator of status.
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall," the Queen whispered. "Who is the most permanent of them all?"
Tonight, the voice in the port sounded different. It was still cold, but it had texture now -a rasp, like dry paper scratching against a stone tomb.
"You, were, My Queen," the glass hissed.
A crack spread across the obsidian surface. Within the fracture, a figure moved. A man in a coat of moth-wings, standing in the corner of a room that was not the Queen's. He was threading a long, black needle.
The image changed. It showed a girl. Snow White. She was sitting in the castle garden among the white roses, so still that a bird landed on her finger, chirping at a statue that didn't breath.
"The mimic," the voice rasped. "The girl who walks in snow. She is the perfect specimen. She does not age. She simply...is."
Driven by fear she didn't understand, Ravenna sent her huntsman to bring the girl back- not her hear, but her eyes. "I want to see what she sees," the Queen hissed.
But when the huntsman cornered Snow White in the deep woods, he found a horror beyond the reach of a blade. She didn't scream. She unzipped.
As the huntsman raised his knife, he saw his own reflection in the girl's pupils. But the reflection began to move independently. It reached out. It grabbed his wrist. The "dwarfs" - small, rusted entities with measuring tapes and calipers- emerged from the hollows of the trees. They didn't want his life; they wanted his dimensions.
Back in the castle, the Queen felt a sudden, biting chill. The obsidian port didn't just crack; it shattered outward.
Snow White stood in the doorway. She held a red apple, but it wasn't fruit. It was a Pulse- a small, beating heart encased in cold, red wax.
"The Curator says you want to be permanent," Snow White said, her voice sounding like glass shards rubbing together. "Take a bite of the ending."
The Queen bit.
The juice was liquid nitrogen. Her blood turned to lead. Her skin hardened into a thick, white enamel. She tried to scream, but her jaw fused shut in a perfect, silent 'O.' She was becoming the very thing she envied: a statue.
The Curator stepped out from behind a heavy velvet curtain. He ignored the paralyzed Queen. He walked to Snow White and gently adjusted the tilt of her head.
"A bit more to the left," he murmured, his voice a dry wind. "The light hits the tragedy better that way."
He picked up a heavy gold frame and placed it around the Queen, who was now a frozen monument of terror. He didn't look back as he walked into the shattered remains of the port, pulling the "Snow White" entity along behind him like a shadow on a leash.
"A Queen who loved her reflection so much she forgot that mirrors are two-sided. She got her wish; she is the fairest, the stillest, and the loneliest piece in the gallery. A successful reproduction... In the Negative Space."
