Robert Buchanan Biography | Poet

Robert Buchanan was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1813 and became an energetic voice in the radical socialist and freethought movements of the nineteenth century. Throughout his life he moved between several professions, working successively as a schoolmaster, Socialist missionary, and journalist, always driven by a passion for reform and intellectual independence.

Buchanan eventually settled in Manchester, where he became deeply involved in the growing socialist and secularist circles inspired by the ideas of Robert Owen. During this period he produced a number of controversial and widely discussed works, including Religion of the Past and Present (1839) and The Origin and Nature of Ghosts (1840). He also published An Exposure of Joseph Barker and A Concise History of Modern Priestcraft, works that reflected his sharp criticism of organized religion and clerical influence.

At a time when socialist speakers were frequently harassed by authorities, Buchanan himself faced prosecution for lecturing on Sundays. His refusal to take the oath of supremacy resulted in fines and further public controversy, strengthening his reputation as a determined advocate for freedom of expression and secular principles.

After the decline of the Owenite socialist movement, Buchanan turned increasingly toward journalism. He contributed to the influential Northern Star, one of the leading radical newspapers of the age, and later edited the Glasgow Sentinel. His writings combined political activism with social criticism, helping shape working-class discussions during a turbulent period of British reform movements.

Buchanan spent his later years with his family and died at the home of his son — the future poet and dramatist Robert Buchanan — in Bexhill, Sussex, on March 4, 1866. Though less remembered today than some of his contemporaries, he played an important role in the early socialist and freethought movements of Britain.
