It's no wonder the history repeats itself when we are so hellbent on memorizing dates and names rather than messages and morals.

Exactly, I hated the fact we had to memorize all the least relevant things, completely neglecting the lessons from those events, thoughts of those great people (i.e. Marcus Aurelius, nobody ever mentioned his thoughts, just the key dates of his reign), etc.
