This Is Us

What would you say if I told you I didn’t know if I loved you?
It’s hard to really know for sure.
How can I say either way when all I have
Is a voice on the phone?
But this is you.
And this is us.

What would you say if I told you I didn’t know you at all?
You’re just a shadow or memory.
How can I know you when you are not you,
Not anymore.
But this is you.
And this is us.

What would you say if I told you I didn’t miss you?
I’ve gone right past that you see.
How can I miss you when all I remember
Is the here and now.
But this is you.
And this is us.

What would you say if I told you I didn’t care anymore?
All my feelings are now just numb.
How can I continue to give my heart when
My soul has forgotten you.
But this is you.
And this is us.

Yet, what would I say if you told me you didn’t love me anymore?
I would break into pieces.
How can I live without you when my life
Is because of you.
This is me.
And this is us.

This is prison life
And I’m a prison wife.
