Foundations

I used to be an open foundation
Unbounded by walls
But firm where I stood
With light shone upon me

You came along
And stacked the bricks one by one
Shutting out the light
Trapping the darkness inside

My change went unnoticed
For you saw the light
Peaking through the windows
Where you wanted me to be seen

What I truly needed, however,
Was someone to take me apart
Piece by piece
Letting the light back in

It wasn't until you left
That I realized the windows weren't enough
And I left myself vulnerable
To anyone ready to take me apart

I am now an open foundation
Unbounded by walls
Firm where I stand
With light shone upon me
