Devonian Dream

We were fish in a wide and humming day,
No limbs on land, no left-hand brains,
The world was prehistoric:

With silvery springs and shimmery shoals,
Billowing reefs, rumbling stones,
Our unfolding jaws with flaps and bones.

No rings to wear, no words to own,
No fur, no quills, no left-hand poems,
No limbs on land, no right-side brains,

Just watery weeds and whirling winds,
Our shimmering scales and fluttering fins,
The shifting land, the rumbling stones,
Our unfolding jaws with flaps and bones.
