A Spoken Word Piece Inspired by Brown v. Board of Education
May 17, 1954…
A date written in the ink of courage.
A day when little Black children
carrying books bigger than their bodies
walked into history.
Before the ruling,
there were signs.
White school. Colored school.
Separate doors. Separate desks.
Separate dreams.
But somebody dared to ask:
“How can education be equal
when humanity is divided?”
And the echoes of that question
reached the highest court in the land.
Mothers prayed.
Fathers worked.
Children endured.
Teachers pushed through broken systems
with secondhand books
and first-class determination.
Then came the words,
“Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.”
Not just a sentence.
A shaking.
A reckoning.
A crack in the walls of segregation.
Because those children were never asking for special treatment.
Only equal opportunity.
Only dignity.
Only the right to learn
without being told
their skin was a limitation.
May 17, 1954 reminds us
that progress is costly.
That justice requires voices.
That history changes
when ordinary people refuse to accept injustice as normal.
And even now,
we remember.
We remember the steps walked.
The tears cried.
The courage carried into classrooms
where hatred once stood guard.
Because education is not a privilege for a few,
it is a promise for all.
And every child
deserves to walk into a classroom
feeling seen, valued, and equal.
May 17, 1954.
A decision.
A movement.
A legacy.
Still speaking.
