Inebriated Couple

Inebriated Couple
By Valerie D. Staton

A plethora of expletives the couple exchanged
Curious eyes affixed to window panes...
It’s big boned Retha and pretty boy Wayne
And their outrageous antics once again

Walking down the street throwing blows
Slapping, kicking, punching – toe to toe
In route to the neighborhood liquor store
To see what intoxicants, they can score

Allies when there’s plenty, foes when they lack
Fighting along the way, in love coming back
Though their eyes are swollen and shaded black,
They hobble hand in hand into their love shack

Filled with spirits, pleasantries they’d extend
A temporary fix for the cycle never ends...
As soon as their scars began to mend,
Was war initiated once again

One Sunday morning, church they attended
Got down on their knees and then repented
Cravings for booze abruptly relented
Retha and Wayne – lifestyles amended

Now the couple have new names,
Sister Retha and Brother Wayne!
