Daddy, Tell Me Why

Daddy,
Can you look me in the eye?
Tell me, am I no longer beautiful?
Daddy, can you tell me why?
Why did those men hurt me?

Daddy,
Can you no longer look at me,
Without seeing the scars?
Daddy, can you tell me why?
Why are you behind bars?

Daddy,
Can you no longer love me?
Am I a broken toy to you?
Daddy, can you tell me why?
Why did it break you too?

Daddy,
Can you no longer hug me?
Are you afraid I'll be afraid?
Daddy, can you tell me why?
Why won't it heal with a band-aid?

Daddy,
Can you look me in the eye?
And not see those men but me?
Daddy, can you tell me why?
Why are you not here?

Daddy,
Can you believe my words?
You didn't fail as a father.
Daddy, let me tell you why.
Because I am your daughter.

We both survived.
