The Making Of A Team - Another Prelude To An Off Broadway Performance

Enter a town,
Circa 1938.
Where money was scarce,
but dreams were great.

Men of color,
and the people in their midst.
Surrounded by hate,
yet still determined to persist.

A chance at real baseball,
this game they lived and breathed.
The only way out of oppression,
to play in those Negro Leagues.

Their dreams were quite simple,
not much different from any other man.
A house, a family... Just to be equal where they stand.

As we look back in time,
unfair as it may seem.
This story must be told,
to preserve the essence of a dream.

So in an effort to keep such ignorance,
again from it's ugly head to be seen.
Ladies and Gentlemen!
We now present to you...
"The Making Of A Team".

"The Making Of A Team" does a great job of capturing some of the atmosphere black players endured during baseball's pre-integration period. Mr. Witherspoon's poem also does a great job of not diving deeply into the negativity which really makes this work shine - it focuses more on the players and what they were working towards versus any obstacles or technicalities (with respect to Marianne Moore). Hello Chris, I enjoyed the moment, the presentation of a crowd, and reaction, before getting to know, the performance. I Would love to see the show, with pleasure, league or not, we are all of the same....Love LINDA
