Nocturnal Life

The dark veil of night settles over the prairie,
A pale moon lights the scene,
Prairie mice scurry across the plain,
Hawks look on with hungry eyes,
Lonely howls fill the air
And the nocturnal life endures.

The spirit of hunting beats through the night.
Its rhythmic drum can be heard
In the dying squeal of prey.

Empty bellies scourge and prowl
For that promised feast.
Nothing much has changed
Since we left our animal ways.

The night still hangs in our minds
To hasten the discovery of our own beast.
