Moments From Execution

When you know you are standing at the brink,
The temptation to find that missing link,
The realization that it was for this moment,
The regret of leaving behind nothing permanent.

Within the grasp of my hand all I have is a wish.
Amidst the burning carcass and gunpowder whiff,
I wish for this second to extend a little while longer,
For I’m not ready now, wait until I’m stronger.

The muffled screams hum like a distant cry,
The sweat running over my temple as seconds run by.
They drop dead, lifeless with horror in their face,
No one comes a winner in this deadly race.

Down on my knees, waiting for it to end me,
Wish my last glimpse was something better to see.
I’m calm for there is nothing more to fight anymore,
War is something that only leaves you bitter and sore.

A deafening noise and my world goes cold,
Down with a thud, there is no legacy of mine to be told.
Pain abandons you but receding memories still linger,
I want to capture them, but I’m just left with a twitching finger.

It’s longer than I thought this ordeal would be,
So this is how I’m finally going to set myself free.
There is about half a breath still stuck in my lungs,
Goodbye to this life, million words still held on my tongue.
