Lilongwe bridge

Eyes witness it impoverished in machine majestically
Old age ruined his bones, many sung the chorus
Historians manifest only a coin maneuver his existence

A passage for traders wheeling around his dusty skeletons
In scorching sun, bullying foots electrifying in his thirsty pedals
A thousand tarmac roads, marrying to his mouth vows

Standing for decades, aging with unburied marks
Sheltering under his arms, those side looked creatures
For years it engulfed thousand smiles, even cries

Seeing muscular town mongers milking his bellies
Even authorities proofed his tongue shield scratching scholars
Like a mathematician making love to scratch papers

Hastily to impregnate answers
Bomb sited the magnificent ‘Lilongwe’ bridge
You’ll be missed legendary canal, which is no more

The three-line stanzas give this elegy a steady rhythm, while the bridge’s personification makes its destruction feel like the loss of a living elder. Images of traders, shelter, smiles and cries movingly evoke its place in the community’s shared history.
