promising people
People promise things all the time,
just like they are promising to fly.
They promise the impossible,
then throw those promises away.
You promised to be my friend,
but you broke that promise too.
Someone asked me something-
smiling at the tears in my eyes.
They thought I was happy,
but I was about to cry.
I wasn't crying from happiness.
I was trying not to fall apart.
They looked at me with sadness,
but I had seen it all before.
Their reaction felt familiar-
but I got déjà vu.
