Passage of Time

It's already been a month.
I am stuck in one place,
                yet they march forward.
                        They are so content
                                to keep marching forward.

                                        I can't figure out how
it's only been a month, and
                                                        I can't march. Can't speak.
I can't find it in me to move forward.
                                                        I can't march. Can't speak.
it's only been a month, and
                                        I can't figure out how.

                                to keep marching forward.
                        they are so content
                yet they march forward.
I am stuck in one place,
It's already been a month.

Yet they march forward? Is it the days? So sorry for your loss, Katie. Grief is an all-encompassing thing. Time passes, the heart aches, we rehearse the loss, drown in its sadness. I hope you find comfort in the little things. My heart breaks for you.😱

This is deeply affecting. The widening and narrowing indentation creates a visual sense of time moving away from the speaker, then folding back into the same stunned moment. Repeated phrases—especially “I can’t march. Can’t speak.”—give grief its truthful paralysis, while “they march forward” sharply captures the isolating contrast between private loss and the world’s continued motion.
