Drowning
Drowning does not bring a calm escape,
Cave diving lacks any peaceful allure.
Though some may assert otherwise, I know,
There's no tranquill closing of the eyes,
No soft wave of water upon the lips.
It becomes a frantic fight for your breath,
Sucking air from your rebreather, you strive,
Catching the last gasps from your dwindling tank.
You tug, kick, and pull your partner away,
In every direction, pulling against fate,
Trying to release them from the dark grip,
Struggling to save both souls from the depths,
Chained to this relentless underwater cave.
The walls close in tight around you both,
As water seeps into your equipment,
A presence that threatens to take your life.
Your partner is trapped in a narrow hold,
And you cannot rise until they are freed.
Panic seizes your heart as you thrash hard,
Breath grows more labored, air seeps from your grasp.
Then the drowning comes, a crushing pressure,
A vice, bringing an agony so profound.
With every desperate attempt to Inhale,
Frantic gasps follow in rapid sequence,
A burning tightness constricts your thundering chest,
Accompanied by intense coughing fits,
Expelling pink, frothy fluid that drifts
In quiet surrender amid the dark.
After chaos and despair have raged on,
After the struggle that felt endless,
You finally find mercy, your pain fades.
Released at last from those depths of despair.
