They Said He'd Change

I held on like the world would end
If I let go of the man I called a friend
He broke me slow with gentle lies
And wiped my tears while making me cry

I made excuses I covered the scars
Told myself love was meant to be hard
They said he’d change and I believed
Every promise I blindly received

Nights were long and peace was thin
He'd leave and come back like nothing's been
I’d beg for kindness like it was gold
But cold hands don’t ever learn to hold

I lost myself in the name of “us”
Traded my voice for his broken trust
Still I smiled when they asked if I’m fine
Told them love just needs more time

Now I walk with silence in my chest
A little wiser a little less impressed
They said he’d change and maybe he tried
But so did I, till I nearly died.
Till I nearly nearly died.
