When Stars Stand
Two stars begin to fall
A cascade of brilliant light
Striking is the speed of their descent
Like athletes whose glistening muscles are spent
Yet they run off the field at the end
The first to fall is Courage
He falls swiftly
And is frustrated that he cannot hold his place
Like a runner who prepared for the wrong race
Because he mistook a marathon for a sprint
Next falls Peace
She falls quickly
And bumps into others-making a noisy plunge
Like hungry children who make a lunge
For the last piece of pie
But there are stars remaining
Faith, Hope, and Love are in no danger
They stand with defiance, ready to fight like brothers
Who have made a pact to defend each other
And hold each other accountable-for light
