Skyscraper
We built off of an empty hope
That’s now dead and decayed
We hung our wants and dreams on rope
And since then, it has frayed
We painted our story on the walls
Which have begun to fade
If we hadn’t built our love so tall
Maybe we wouldn’t have swayed
If we hadn’t built a love at all
Maybe we would’ve stayed
They say that life’s a vapor
Death hides behind its veil
We chose to build a skyscraper
Believing love could never fail
But our foundation was too weak
And the storm, it was too strong
We ignored each shift and creak
Denied that anything was wrong
Then everything we worked so hard to gain
Came crumbling, crashing to the ground
Our laughter, joy, and pain-
Now dust is all that’s found
And we’re picking up every scrap and shard
Of something that wasn’t built to last
Two hearts that have now been marred
Two broken people with a broken past
So our love was like life’s vapor
It’s like the people say
You make it in the newspaper
And are forgotten the next day
You build a skyscraper
Thinking it will always stay
You build a skyscraper
And one day, it starts to sway
