That Whence We Came
I screamed for You in that cathedral, and the cathedral did not answer me. Not once. My cries climbed the pillars like smoke, yet the heavens remained sealed, and silence became the only scripture laid before me.
I lifted mine eyes and found myself ever more confounded, for we had met beneath the same night, beneath the same storm, broken alike, with fragments of ourselves scattered upon the earth as leaves before the wind. Yet behold, I stand still within that mist, and I alone remain recognizable in the darkness, while thy countenance has become a stranger unto me.
Tell me now, seeing that many hands have drawn thee from thy pit, hast thou forgotten me? Am I become unworthy to enter thy sanctuary? Dost thou behold me with pity, as though I were but a ghost lingering where the living have no desire to tread?
Have thy comforts erased thy memory?
For I wept beside thee when no man came. I bore witness to thy solitude while the world passed thee by. We sat together in the ashes of our own making, each praying for a dawn neither believed would ever rise. I knew the language of thy silence because it was the very tongue my own soul spoke.
Answer me this, Ole friend. When thou didst hear my voice crying into the void, didst thou cry also? Or didst thou stretch forth thy hand and seize the blessing for which I had long pleaded? Is this why thine eyes flee from mine? Because somewhere within thee remains the dreadful knowing that the abundance of thy love was purchased while my own petitions lay unanswered upon the altar?
Be not troubled. I bear thee no envy.
I would sooner return unto that forsaken place than leave thee abandoned there. Had Heaven poured every blessing into my hands, I would seek ye not for I would have long forgotten myself before you, which is why I cannot hold myself to say those words unto you for I would hath lied as you are now.
Yet hear me now.
The debt of remembrance is a patient collector.
That which I freely gave unto thee shall one day return and stand before thee. The foundations upon which thou hast built thy peace shall quake beneath thy feet. Thy bones shall tremble, not because I have cursed thee, but because truth has entered the room. The walls behind which thou hast hidden shall crack, and every comforting shadow shall flee from before the light.
For thou knowest this already.
Thou wast never meant to dwell in that sanctuary while pretending the road by which thou enteredst it did not pass through me.
Now neither of us belonged there.
The only difference is that I spoke in the darkness.
While thou hide from it while being amongst it.
