Descending Into Age

You were my hero and my rock
You were the reason why I am who I am
You were so strong and quick witted
A very charismatic gentleman
You taught me so much about life
As well as teaching me manners and class
I always looked up to you
And I always will

Now I see a man who is descending into age
As we all do
But I feel helpless as I don’t know
How to spark your interests
Your passions
And your zest for life
As I see you so thin and frail in front of me

Your memory is fading away
But not my memories of how you made me laugh
How you made me feel important
And how you made me feel life is supposed to be more than
Just going through the motions
But that’s what you are doing now
And it hurts me so
I don’t know what to do
I am weighed down with worry

If I haven’t told you
But I do say it as much as I remember every day
That I love you dearly

So for tonight I try to sleep
Knowing you are alone in your home
Hoping you will arise with the sun
And I will awaken
With a feeling of uneasiness
So I will call to hear your soft voice
And to tell you again that I love you dad
I always have
And I always will
Tomorrow has no guarantee
So I am thankful for today
