Lady Bird Lake

I saw lady bird today. She was peaceful. The moon glistened, the water flowed, the city was vibrant.

The air was crisp and the breeze kissed my lips.

She’s beautiful at night.

I sit on the bench aside the lake and see my reflection in the water, I smile. She smiles.

I cry. She cries with me.

I skip a rock and it’s there lady bird plays along with me.

She’s not an imaginary friend, but it’s here on this bench at 10:37 pm that I feel she’s here, sitting with me, staring at the city line, holding my hand as if to say, I was never alone.

Oh lady bird, I’ll follow your waves for a lifetime, save our conversations in the depths of my heart, and take our memories to the grave.

Lady bird, you silly girl you.

You were the first to see me panic, and the first to hold me

Lady bird, I heard another body was found here this summer.
I hope you held him as you’ve held me, listened to his voice as you did mine.
Caretaker. Love maker. Heart saver. All from a lake called lady bird.
