Fool

I let it slip away, I led our love astray
You put me under a spell,
I lacked the resistance to the temptation
Your beauty blessed and blinded my eyes

I carved mountains for you,
I sculpted parts of myself for you
I was no prince charming in our love, but a jester
A fool who followed your command

You hurt me, repeatedly broke my heart into pieces
Yet every night I rebuilt and mended the pieces,
my heart was given right back to you,
I thought there would be no repetition

The fairytale isn’t black and white
We had deep connections, wonderful memories,
We loved each other, and spread hate to one another.

In some ways that blessed me
I learned so many new things because of you,
I sought out self-care, new hobbies,
Found new music, new experiences.

You didn’t change at all, you ignored the invitations to grow,
You refused to try to be a better person, and that’s all my fault.
In every argument I took the blame, I let it slip away
I would rather see your smile than your scornful eyes.

You learned that I was not a fighter not a prince, but a fool
A fool that would slip away and come back again.
Our relationship failed because of me.
When I finally let it slip away that final time we both cried,

We know we love each other
I had changed for better and for worse.
My memories with you will never fade,
But I let it slip away this final time to escape you
