The Sins of the Fathers

Years ago
I heard someone say children have a God given right to judge their parents

Judge not that you be not judged

I thought the statement was harsh, maybe sarcastic, wrong headed
But I did it anyway
Not in a psych couch way but in the I’ll do it
Better
Not the same
Not The repetition of

The sins of the father

After all, we can learn from our mistakes
And the mistakes of others, but
Some
Get repeated
Over
Again

And some are just our own or a hybrid of the parents we weren’t going to be like

In the same way you judge others you will also be judged

I meant to be different
To be better in the ways I needed
When I wasn’t the parent

But I failed in your ways
In my own and in ways that I have to claim

I would rather analyze it and find a cause other than myself
It’s there, they are there
But it's harder to blame the repetition in yourself
Rather than the repetition of a father who had a father himself

I was judging, I’m judged
I felt pride, now shame
Regret
some pain

Will mine judge me
Undoubtedly
Will I deserve it
Unreservedly

The son will not bear the punishment for the sin of the father, nor the father for the sin of the son

There’s enough weight to go around
And the heaviness remains
