Hung Upon a Star

Would you wish upon a car?
Would that get you very far?
Send thoughts and prayers but never plan
to help and heal this broken land?

My partner often prayed in earnest
to avoid the everlasting furnace,
but the world still looks the same to me:
no burp in nature’s chemistry,

no nudge in hearts or minds or nations,
no end to chaos or calculations,
no new logic or explanations.

Where is Love? The universe we see above
is a brilliant neighborhood of stars
hiding galaxies away from ours. It cares not
for you or me. Its purpose is to simply be,
to birth new stars continually
for ages, aye, but splendidly.

Where is Peace? The pain I feel may never cease.
In many forms the virus grew -
the cure was something no one knew. It cares not
for you or me. Its purpose is to simply be,
to birth new forms continually
for ages, aye, but splendidly.

She hung her life upon her faith,
feared ancient words, a paper skaith.
When science finally found a cure
she dismissed it all, “A hoax, I’m sure.”

How lovely were my partner’s eyes,
how sad I am at her demise.
She found too late the world we know,
and wishing isn’t thinking so.
