White Noise

A heavy presence in the back of my mind
Nagging, needy, relentless
A constant white noise
That buzzes without regard for time of day
A reminder that the bubble has burst
Leaving me gasping for a painful breath

The past is unforgiving,
Our future seems out of reach
The weight of our mistakes
Too great to bear alone
And we both know
we can’t do it together like we used to
