Rough Childhood

Growing up was tough
This isn't a bluff
I only made it with persistence
It would have been easier with assistance

My Dad wasn't a Dad
He was violent more than a tad
Thing swung, mainly emotions and fists
Things were hurt, mainly feelings and wrists

My Mother wasn't a Mother
She was more of a brother
She mainly joked and slept
With bruises she hid and kept

Growing up wasn't that bad
I don't hold grudges, I'm not mad
I wasn't raised right, but I didn't stop
My need to eat won't be sated with a mop

I'll raise my kids right
Their parents will never fight
They won't have to fear
Their Dad turning to beer
Or their mother weeping
And spending her free time sleeping

Growing up was tough, but it won't be for my kids

Hi Ethan! My name is Brooklyn and I'm in 10th grade. I'm really touched by your poem. Even though I'll never know exactly how it feels to be you and to have gone through what you've gone through, I can say I at least understand. No one should ever experience a childhood like this, and I'm sorry you did. I hope things get better for you, Ethan. With love, Brooklyn
